Rosa Parks helped initiate the Civil Rights Movement in the United States when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama in December 1955.
Assisted by Dr Martin Luther King Jr and supported by a community previously dependent on public transportation, Rosa Parks gained the attention of the world to give a voice to the atrocities of legalised segregation in the American South.
This accomplishment would not have been achieved if it weren’t for the persona of Rosa Parks and the involvement of people who cared. And it is through this act of collaboration and standing united that Rosa Parks became known as the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement.
Rosa Parks’ legacy shows us that we all possess immeasurable power to impact change.
Each of us has the opportunity in our ordinary, daily lives to find opportunities to make a difference. Our internal values impact our external behaviour – we should not underestimate our ability to contribute to the lives of humans in the world around us.
We learn from Rosa Parks’ experience that where we are and what we do can prompt the extraordinary. We’ll see how deeply ingrained, deliberately practised habits lead to success, and what accomplishments are possible when we establish networks around us.
“Her behaviour, rooted in her commitment to a greater cause, provided a platform for the change she desired.”
